DIETETICS – HELPING YOU CUT THROUGH THE NOISE OF NUTRITION ADVICE & FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU.

Food is all around us. It's the packed lunchbox children bring to school, the catch ups with your friends at the local restaurant, or the comfort foods you have at home when watching a movie. It fuels our body for energy and our brain for concentration. As such, a healthy, balanced diet is important to help you live every day to the fullest.

At Pre-Emptive Healthcare, we understand how overwhelming it can be to navigate the world of nutrition. With conflicting advice from the media, social media, Google, and even those around you, it's easy to feel uncertain about what's right for you. Our Accredited Practising Dietitian, Oscar, can provide you with expert, evidence-based guidance to help you make sense of it all and feel confident in your nutrition choices. We work together with each individual to create nutrition plans designed to support you to achieve your goals.

The gut–brain link
is real.

Research in nutritional psychiatry has grown enormously in recent years. We now know that diet quality is one of the most modifiable risk factors for depression and anxiety, and that targeted nutritional intervention can meaningfully improve outcomes alongside standard treatment.

Your Nutrition Journey

A clear, supportive process (practical, non-judgmental, and always led by your goals).

1
No Referral Needed

Book Directly

You can self-refer directly to our dietitian. No GP referral is required. However, if you have a chronic condition, a GP referral and care plan may entitle you to Medicare rebates. Call our reception or book online and we'll guide you through what applies to your situation.

2
Getting to Know You

Initial Assessment (60 min)

Your first appointment covers your health history, current eating patterns, relationship with food, lifestyle, goals, and any mental health context. There's no judgment here. Our dietitian will meet you exactly where you are, with curiosity and warmth.

3
Your Plan

Personalised Nutrition Strategy

We develop a practical, realistic plan tailored to your needs, not a rigid meal plan or a list of restrictions, but a sustainable approach that fits your life. This may include meal ideas, behavioural strategies, gut health support, or specific clinical nutrition interventions.

4
Integrated Care

Collaboration with Your Team

Where relevant, our dietitian communicates directly with your psychologist, psychiatrist, and GP, ensuring your nutrition plan complements your broader treatment and everyone is working from the same page. This is one of the key advantages of care under one roof.

5
Ongoing Support

Review & Adjustment (30 min)

Follow-up sessions check in on progress, troubleshoot challenges, and adjust your plan as your needs evolve. Some clients see our dietitian weekly during active treatment; others monthly for maintenance. We'll recommend a frequency that makes sense for you.

What to Expect

Dietetics at Pre-Emptive is different. Here's what sets our approach apart.

No diets. No restriction plans.

We don't hand you a rigid meal plan and send you on your way. Our approach is flexible, evidence-based, and built around your life, not a template.

Weight-neutral & judgment-free

We use a Health at Every Size framework. Your weight is not a goal here. Your health, energy, and quality of life are.

Culturally sensitive

Food is deeply personal and cultural. We work with your food preferences, traditions, and background, not against them.

Truly integrated with your team

Oscar communicates directly with your psychologist or psychiatrist where relevant, so your nutrition care doesn't exist in isolation.

Practical & sustainable

Every recommendation accounts for your budget, time, cooking ability, and lifestyle. No unrealistic expectations, just real, achievable change.

A note on eating disorders

If you're coming to us with a difficult relationship with food or your body, you're in safe hands. Oscar has specialist training in eating disorder dietetics and understands how complex and sensitive this work is.

We work collaboratively with your psychologist and, where needed, your psychiatrist and GP, using a multi-disciplinary approach that is the gold standard for eating disorder recovery.

There is no pressure, no weigh-ins unless you want them, and no judgment, ever.

Recovery is not a straight line, and nutrition is just one part of the picture. We go at your pace.

Frequently Asked

Answers to the questions we hear most often about dietetic care.

Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?

No referral is needed to book with our dietitian. However, if you have a chronic condition (including some mental health conditions), a GP referral and a Chronic Disease Management Plan may entitle you to Medicare rebates for up to 5 dietetic sessions per calendar year. Ask your GP or call our reception and we'll help you work out what applies.

Will I be put on a strict diet or meal plan?

Absolutely not. Our approach is the opposite of rigid dieting. We help you build a sustainable, enjoyable way of eating that supports your health and mental wellbeing, not a plan that creates more stress or restriction. If a more structured guide is helpful for you, we can create that together, but it will always be flexible and realistic.

I have an eating disorder. Is it safe to see a dietitian?

Yes, and in many cases, working with a dietitian who specialises in eating disorders is a crucial part of recovery. Oscar has specific training in this area and understands the psychological complexity of disordered eating. He will never pressure you, discuss numbers in a way that feels unsafe, or take an approach that isn't led by you. We always recommend concurrent psychological support, which we can facilitate here.

How is this different from seeing a regular dietitian?

The key difference is integration. Oscar works within a multidisciplinary mental health team, meaning he can communicate directly with your psychologist and psychiatrist, align his approach with your therapy goals, and respond to changes in your mental health treatment. Most community dietitians work in isolation; ours doesn't.

Does diet really affect mental health?

The evidence is clear and growing. The field of nutritional psychiatry has demonstrated strong links between diet quality and depression, anxiety, ADHD, and cognitive function. The gut-brain axis, the connection between your digestive system and your brain, is now understood to play a significant role in mood regulation. Diet is not a replacement for therapy or medication, but it can meaningfully support your recovery alongside them.

Can I see Oscar via telehealth?

Yes. Dietetic consultations are available both in-person at our Balwyn North rooms and via telehealth. Many clients find telehealth sessions just as effective, and they make it easier to fit appointments around work and family commitments. Medicare rebates apply to eligible telehealth sessions in the same way as in-person visits.

Relevant Blood Tests, Medication List, Medical History, GP Referral (if applicable)

Although Oscar will review this with you during your appointment, it can be helpful to consider your health goals, any questions you may have, and writing down what you ate over the past week. To ensure this process as seamless as possible for you, please see below a weekly meal planner!

GP Referrals may be required for access to government services such as, Medicare, National Disability Insurance Scheme and Department of Veterans' Affairs.

For eligible clients, we do accept Eating Disorder Treatment & Management Plans (EDP). Please discuss the development of an EDP with your treating GP or Psychiatrist.

At Pre-Emptive Healthcare, we celebrate and respect the diversity of all individuals. We understand that bodies, food choices, eating habits, and sensory sensitivities vary from person to person.
