ABOUT OUR ASSESSING CLINICIANS

Our assessing clinicians hold a special interest in neurodiversity, including ADHD and Autism across the lifespan. They are passionate about helping individuals understand their unique thinking styles and supporting them to thrive in school, work, and life. They approach clients with warmth, valuing collaborative, and support grounded in evidence-based practice.

They are committed to ensuring that each assessment experience is respectful, validating, and empowering, offering clients a clear understanding of both their strengths and support needs.

UNDERSTANDING NEURODIVERSITY

Neurodiversity acknowledges the natural variations in how people think, learn, and process information. This includes differences such as Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), along with other neurological variations. Recognising neurodiversity means appreciating both the strengths and challenges these differences bring, as part of human diversity.

OVERLAP BETWEEN AUTISM AND ADHD

It’s common for individuals to experience traits of both Autism and ADHD, sometimes referred to as AuDHD. ADHD is often associated with attention regulation, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, while Autism is characterised by differences in social communication, sensory experiences, and behavioural patterns. Understanding where these experiences overlap is important for accurate assessment and tailored support.

HOW MALES AND FEMALES MAY EXPERIENCE AUTISM DIFFERENTLY

While the core features of ADHD and Autism are consistent across genders, research shows that females may experience these differences in more subtle ways.

Autism in females: They may have less obvious social communication differences, sometimes masking these by mimicking others or “fitting in.” This can lead to fewer or delayed diagnoses.

ADHD in females: Hyperactivity may be less visible, with internalised symptoms such as inattention, daydreaming, or anxiety more common.

As a result, many females do not receive timely recognition or support, and this can contribute to other mental health challenges later in life.

IMPACT OF MASKING

Masking involves hiding or suppressing neurodivergent traits to meet social expectations. People may do this by copying social behaviours, managing sensory responses, or suppressing emotions. While masking can help in some situations, it often leads to exhaustion, delayed diagnosis, and difficulty embracing one’s authentic self.

BENEFITS OF AN ASSESSMENT

An assessment with a psychologist can provide clarity and understanding of your unique strengths, challenges, and overall well-being. Benefits include:

  • Increased self-awareness and acceptance
  • Clear documentation to support access to services such as the NDIS
  • Guidance for schools, workplaces, and families to provide the right support
  • A pathway to better mental health and well-being

Autistic individuals often bring distinctive skills and perspectives that contribute meaningfully to society. While every autistic person’s experience is unique, the right understanding and support can help manage challenges and celebrate strengths.

Autistic individuals often possess distinctive skills and attributes that can greatly benefit society. These strengths may enable autistic people to contribute in unique and powerful ways. Not every autistic person will exhibit all of these traits, but studies show these qualities are commonly observed in the community.

While every autistic person’s experience is unique, certain challenges may arise as part of their neurodivergent nature. With the right support and understanding, these challenges can be better managed and accommodated.

MEDICARE REBATES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

In Australia, individuals under 25 years of age may be eligible for Medicare rebates to help cover the cost of an Autism or ADHD assessment when referred by a paediatrician or psychiatrist. This can make the process more accessible for families and young people seeking clarity and support.

Our team can provide guidance on what documentation is required for Medicare claims and support you through the process.

Disclaimer:

Psychologists cannot prescribe medication or authorise GPs to prescribe it. For ADHD, some people may seek medication directly from a psychiatrist without a report. For both ADHD and ASD, an assessment can still provide valuable insights into the condition and guide management, including in collaboration with medical practitioners.

ASD, ADHD and combined ASD/ADHD assessments provided directly to clients for the purpose of clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning are generally GST-free under Australian tax law. Where an assessment is commissioned by a third party (for example, an insurer, legal representative, school or other organisation), GST may be applicable.
