WHAT IS NEURODIVERSITY?

Neurodiversity celebrates the natural variations in how individuals think, learn, and process information. First introduced in the late-1990s by Judy Singer in her sociology honours thesis, the concept has since become a focal point in scientific research. It includes a wide range of conditions, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and other neurological differences. This idea challenges the belief that differences from what is considered "normal" are always bad or limiting. Instead, it emphasises the importance of accepting these differences as part of HUMAN diversity and recognising how societal barriers can make things harder for people. By doing so, we can better appreciate the unique strengths and challenges that come with different ways of thinking.

DOES ASD + ADHD OVERLAP?

Yes! ASD and ADHD often overlap. Many individuals experience traits of both conditions, which can make diagnosis complex. ADHD is often associated with unique ways of processing attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, while ASD is characterised by differences in social communication, sensory experiences, and patterns of behaviour. Understanding the overlap is essential for accurate assessment and tailored support.

It’s also possible to receive a diagnosis of both ASD and ADHD, sometimes referred to as AuDHD. For this reason, Pre-Emptive Healthcare takes a comprehensive approach by exploring both areas, rather than focusing on just one.

HOW FEMALES MAY EXPERIENCE ASD + ADHD DIFFERENTLY

While the core characteristics of ASD and ADHD are the same across genders, research shows that females often exhibit these traits differently than males. Females with ASD, for example, may have more subtle social communication differences, making it harder to recognise the condition. They might engage in social mimicry or learn to “mask” their difficulties to fit in, leading to fewer diagnoses. ADHD symptoms in females are also more likely to be overlooked. Instead of exhibiting hyperactivity, they may present with internalised symptoms such as inattention, daydreaming, or anxiety. As a result, females may not receive the support they need until later in life, sometimes then facing other psychological challenges due to being undiagnosed.

WHAT IS MASKING?

Masking refers to the practice of concealing or suppressing neurodivergent traits to conform to societal expectations. Many individuals with ASD or ADHD, particularly females, develop coping strategies like mimicking social behaviors or suppressing their emotions to avoid standing out. While masking may help in certain situations, it can be mentally and emotionally exhausting. Over time, it can lead to burnout, anxiety, and a delayed or missed diagnosis. It often makes it difficult for an individual to fully embrace their authentic self.

HOW CAN AN ASSESSMENT HELP?

An assessment can provide valuable insights into your strengths, challenges, and overall well-being. It can help you better understand yourself and your experiences, enhancing self-awareness and acceptance. Additionally, if needed, an assessment can support access to appropriate services, such as the NDIS or other support programs, by providing the necessary documentation and guidance to navigate referral pathways.

Autistic individuals often possess distinctive skills and attributes that can greatly benefit society. These strengths may enable autistic people to contribute in unique and powerful ways. Not every autistic person will exhibit all of these traits, but studies show these qualities are commonly observed in the community.

While every autistic person’s experience is unique, certain challenges may arise as part of their neurodivergent nature. With the right support and understanding, these challenges can be better managed and accommodated.
